The other night, I had my first trip to the gym. Last summer, I got a membership with my city's parks and rec department, and went to the gym there, and did zumba classes...but that was not a gym. THIS place is a GYM! The people there are not messing around. I walked in, took a look around, and nearly walked right out again. First of all, it is HUGE. Second of all, I went at 6:30pm, so it was a total zoo. I was supposed to go with my BFF, but she wasn't feeling well (and also she sucks - just kidding...I know she reads these, so I need to use the guilt tool my mother taught me). I considered re-scheduling so that she could hold my hand, but I knew if I didn't go last night, I'd never go...so, as intimidated as I was, in I went.
Turns out, it took me about 10 minutes to get used to it and to start chatting to anyone who was lucky enough to find themselves beside me. Want to know my favourite thing? I was NOT the fattest person in there!! Not by a MILE! That's probably horrible, right? That every time I saw a fatty, I mentally measured them to see if they were fatter than me? Oh whatever...I'm a bad person...love me in spite of it! Oh no...wait...my FAVOURITE thing? On like 5 of the 15 TVs in front of me while I was on the treadmill, they had some kind of cooking show!! WHAAAT?? Yeah! One TV was just frozen on a shot of shiny, dripping with sauce ribs. Just all ribs, all the time. What the hell?? Is that like dangling a carrot in front of a donkey? I don't know. It didn't motivate me, but it did amuse me.
I have a standing Tuesday night date with another girlfriend of mine for Zumba on Tuesday nights. We plan to meet at a pub, and then go to zumbafy ourselves. Yeah, I'm aware that's not optimal, but cut me some slack. I just hope I don't puke. And I have my first BodyPump class on Saturday. MORNING. Yeah, that's what I call dedication!
Check you out.. workout queen in the making!!!
ReplyDeleteI went to the bar once before Zumba, had a glass of wine and then went to Zumba.. not a good combo.. just a word to the wise!!
BodyPump? Does your gym offer Les Mills classes? If so, it was nice knowin' ya. ;)
ReplyDeleteJust kidding, that class rocks. You are inspiring me to get my butt back to the gym. And yeah for not being the fattest. Don't be ashamed - you've earned your skinny spot on the fat/skinny spectrum! They will too someday, but for now, it's YOURS!
OMG!! I just wrote out such a long comment.. giving you major props on going to the gym solo and some advice on working out.
ReplyDeleteTo recap.. try spinning .. it's a blast, you control how hard it is, so it's not that scary, and you won't believe what it will do for your bootie and legs.
On weights, I do tiny weights (only 1 lb.. the torture is in the repetition..) as part of my spin class. Other than that, I do yoga, and that seems to be enough to get/keep me toned.
On the motivation front, use the guilt if that's getting you moving. Bribery is good too. Eventually, you'll see what going is doing for your body and realize how awesome you feel, and that will be the thing that gets you in there. But that takes a little time... so go with the guilt for now! :)
(I lost the first comment.. in case that wasn't clear.. agh!)
ReplyDeleteGO GILLY! I met a friend for Zumba this week too, and I just wish I could meet you at the gym a few days a week for some Zumba-ing. Sadly, my knees were sore the day after. That's just pathetic. I need to work on this. Miss you! xoxo
ReplyDeleteWooohoooo - YAY...good job Gillypop!
ReplyDeleteWe'll be Zuma-ing together on Tuesday nights...I'll be wishing you were right here beside me.
ReplyDeleteMiss you so much.
Woo hoo. I am so guilty that I don't work out enough. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Catherine: try "RPM"- you'll dig it and it is a calorie scorcher for sure. (This coming from the peanut gallery that doesn't belong to a gym and hasn't done spinning in an age-- but I did do it once upon a time!)
Glad we never finalized our weight loss competition. Sounds like you are going to be exercising your ass off - literally.
ReplyDeleteDon't be ashamed..LOL, I do this contantly. Walking in the gym and if see somebody that may be bigger than me, I stare for a bit and compare. And breath a sigh of relief that I'm not the biggest one in there. I love the title of your blog. Ladies, hit mine up when you get a chance. I could use the support. Banded 12/28/10
