The Old Navy Story

Tonight the hubs and I are going downtown to see a band called Lowest of the Low (they're Canadian and they are awesome - moderately popular here with the alternative set in the 90's). And fearing going downtown looking like a frumpy mum, I decided to go look for something cool to wear with leggings, since that's what the cool girls are wearing these days. I'm wandering through Old Navy when I see EXACTLY what I'm looking for! This grey knit dress...totally me...adorable. I take it into the fitting room with a bunch of other stuff so that Karma doesn't know how much I want it to look adorable. And I try it on, and it's cute and it fits and my 10 year old gives it the thumbs up...so the decision is made. I'm buying it!

Take it home...try it on for the hubs...he likes it! Yay! The world is a happy place! I should buy a lottery ticket!

Out of the corner of my eye, I see the tag: Old Navy Maternity.

Ouch.

I don't care. I'm keeping it!

So...I may have built that up too much, but I thought it was pretty funny. :P

  1. LOL! Well how can you tell the difference anyway? There are a million sweater dresses and shirts in style right now that have the empire waist. KEEP IT and enjoy it!

  6. I didn't know that band was still around! I used to go see them when I was in university in the 90's.

  7. OMG, I haven't seen Lowest of the Low in AGES!!!!

And you know what, don't worry about it - just cut the maternity tag out if you must.

Last year at Xmas we were looking for a shirt to fit Step-daughter (who was 9 going on 10) and she was wearing a ladies M - L depending on the style.

Because of her weight and build, it's hard to find things to fit her - we ended up finding a pretty shirt that seemed wide enough in the arms and would fit age-appropriately around her torso with an age appropriate neckline.

It was a S from the maternity section - I just cut the tags out.

And I don't even think you can tell it's a maternity shirt -- here's a link to a blog post where I have a pic of her wearing it that we took just this October...

  8. OMG, that is SO something that would happen to me! But you know what? Who gives a damn! If you look good in it, and NOT pregnant (which I'm sure you don't) then I say go for it!

  9. Seriously I get pissed these days because maternity stuff is sooo cute. Back when I was pregnant every shirt was horizontal striped and made to make me look like a cow. I should get pregnant just to wear the cute maternity stuff now. Or not.

  10. I find myself in the maternity section by accident all the time! I like a good empire waist, what can I say? I have often found something super cute and then looked up to find it under a poster of a cute little pregnant model. :)

  11. i just barely fit into the largest of the large old navy yoga pants...that's a 'regular' people store, so i consider fitting into anything there is a big win!

  12. That is hilarious!

And who would know the difference. Maternity is just longer, seems to me...but sometimes we WANT longer! I can't stand how short some of my shirts are...and I don't buy short shirts...if I'd known this earlier, I'd have probably been shopping in maternity years ago!

  13. One of my good friends is petite-- the type who when pregnant *only* has her belly pop out in that supercute way with no other gain.

She is a year out from her last pregnancy and still wears her maternity pants. She says she's never going back, they're so comfortable. I can't tell at all so they can't be that different than normal clothes.

We have U2 tickets for June-- I think I'm looking forward to being able to wear a cute outfit more than I am anything else.

  17. Has happened to me at target!! But the sweater was cute and I still wear it! Sad part is that when I first bought it, it was tight!
