Let's Talk About Apple Cider Vinegar

Have you heard about this? If you haven't, basically, the deal is that drinking 2 tbsp of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with your meals helps you lose weight. I read about the hows and the whys, but really, that's the gist...what else do you really want to know, right? A weight loss claim has been made, and so now, I am powerless to resist its siren song!

I know that no matter how skinny I end up getting (should I ever start losing weight again), if I hear that something will magically help me lose weight, I will try it. Last time, it was matcha green tea. I was absolutely convinced that matcha was going to be THE THING that re-started my weight loss.

Well...matcha, it seems, is over-rated (although it is still very much all the rage with the cool, expensive-tea-drinkin' crowd). But I have much higher hopes for this apple cider vinegar thing. Because it's unpleasant. And things that are unpleasant always work, right?

So...yesterday, I went to the brand new Whole Foods. This is the first once anywhere near my 'hood, so I was understandably excited. I could spend an entire DAY in there! It was foodie heaven! I found not only spelt flour, but spelt PANCAKE MIX! Who cares if it was $11.99 for a bag of it? Spelt has awesome, catch-phrase-y health claims and you can't get it at the A&P...I am IN! And then, as I wandered the aisles, I found a giant bottle of raw, unfiltered, organic (!) apple cider vinegar. Actually, there were like 3 different brands to choose from! And I bought a giant bottle of it...and today is day one of Apple Cider Vinegarfest 2011!!!

I don't know how long this stuff is going to take to start melting the fat from my bones. I hope it's soon though, because sweet jesus, it's pretty gross. I figured I'd just use a shooter glass and shoot the 2 tbsp before each meal, but one website said to dilute it (and who am I to question what a random, health website tells me to do?)...which makes it much more difficult (and I'm a vinegar girl!)

Anyway...I throw myself on this sword not only for myself, but for all of you. You're welcome! Watch this space...

  1. Gilly, I hate to burst your bubble, but I've been drinking apple cider vinegar twice a day for 4 months now trying to regrow my hair, and I don't think it's helped with either hair or weight loss. Having said that, my chiropractor says it's a good liver detox, so I figure it's still worth doing! I use Bragg's.

  9. My mother used to swear by this- years ago, but still. She was a vinegar swilling, knox gelatine drinking girl back in the day to watch her waistline, which was like 24", so who knows? I tried it years ago, but didn't have the stomach for it. Good luck!!!!

  10. Oh gosh, I did this before. Just reading this post brings back the memories and the awful taste. It did absolutely nothing for me. It did make me worry about the enamel on my teeth though. And once that stuff is gone, that stuff is gone. (I don't drink soda either for that very reason>) Don't try hoodia either. Stuff is a waste of money. :(

  11. I don't know if apple cider vinegar works for weight loss, but I can tell you that a splash of it is delicious in tuna salad (along with the mayo).

  13. The only thing I have heard about the apple cider vinegar is that it helps remove fluid. It's the same with two tablespoons of Lemon Juice. Makes you pee like a horse.

Just putting my two cents in. Can't wait to see you guys next weekend. I'll be in to meet up on Saturday--anytime. Plans??

  16. Once I worked at an in-home business run by a friend's grandparents. Grandma W. told me, "Help yourself to iced tea in the fridge." I got a big old glass, and took a gulp and thought, "This is strange iced tea..." but I was thirsty! So, I drank two BIG glasses. Turns out it was part apple cider vinegar, part grape juice, part prune juice, part iced tea with some red pepper flakes thrown in for who knows what reason. It certainly caused a detox... and not just my liver! How did I NOT know the vinegar was in there? I didn't taste it at all! So, if you are looking for a good mixer for your vinegar cocktail... there you go! I hope you loose lots of weight, but not the way I did that day!
